Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
Advanced Mechanical Support for Critically Weak Hearts
The Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) is a specialized device used in critical cardiac situations to support the heart when it is too weak to pump blood effectively. At Dr. Siva Prasad’s Hrudayalaya, we use IABP as part of our advanced cardiac emergency and ICU care — especially for patients in cardiogenic shock or those recovering from major heart attacks or cardiac surgeries.
How the Procedure is Done:
A balloon catheter is inserted into the aorta through the groin artery.
The balloon inflates and deflates in sync with the heartbeat.
This helps improve blood flow to the heart and brain.
The device is monitored in ICU continuously.
It is removed once heart function stabilizes.
When is Angioplasty Recommended?
Cardiogenic shock or severe heart failure
Low blood pressure after a heart attack
As support before or after cardiac surgery
For high-risk PCI (angioplasty)
